Ongoing Ecological Assessment

The intervention process starts with a thorough observation of the person with disability in his own environment. This work can be described as an ongoing process which goes along with the entire intervention and provides an ecological evaluation of the person’s developmental level.

Individualized Activities

The assessment provides cues for setting therapeutic goals that address the real needs of the person; on the basis of those goals, tailored activities are planned in order to develop and/or strengthen the compromised abilities.

Team Work

Intervention is conducted by a team composed by therapists (operatori), coordinators and supervisors working together; each of them has specific responsibilities and duties and contributes to the optimal implementation of the treatment. Specifically trained to work one-to-one with the person with disability, usually the participation of male and female therapists (operatori) is assured in order to have the person experience a wide range of relational dynamics.

H.C.B. (Home and Community Based) Setting

Intervention takes place in a Home and Community Based setting as it is conducted at the person’s home and is extended to all those external contexts (supermarket, dentist, beach, public transportation, etc.) where social interaction and incidental learning are crucial for the growth of the person, for the development/strengthening of his abilities and the improvement of his independence skills.

Family Involvement

According to the G.A.D. Approach, intervention must involve the family of the person with disability; family members and caregivers are trained and informed on the content and modalities of the intervention; this way each activity led by the therapist (operatore) can be repeated later by the family members, in order to establish a therapeutic continuum in the everyday life.

Building a conscious community

The intervention involves also all those people in the neighbourhood who take part in the every day extra family activities; each person potentially available to participate in the treatment is informed on the skills of the person with disability and on how to interact effectively with him.
